![]() Suspended in time and space for a moment, your introduction to Miss Janet Tyler, who lives in a very private world of darkness. Reruns following the initial broadcast featured the title screen “The Private World of Darkness.” Originally a “The” preceded the title, until television producer Stuart Reynolds threatened to sue Rod Serling for the use of the name because at the time he was selling an educational film of the same name to public schools. I’ve seen this epidsode listed by two names…now I know why. She was not yet known to anybody, but she was absolutely stunning. Although not well known at the time, she soon would be, as Jed Clampett’s daughter Ellie on The Beverly Hillbillies. She was going to dub her voice over the top of Donna Douglas’s part but Donna’s voice was so similar to they just kept her voice.Ī young Donna Douglas plays Janet Tyler. The director cast her because of her voice, her voice did not suggest a beautiful girl it suggested a strong, harsh, realistic woman, and therefore the unveiling would be a surprise. The first was Maxine Stuart, as Janet Tyler in bandages. Two actresses play the same character in this episode. What is normal? What is beauty? Who decides that? It still holds up through on repeat viewings. Undesirables get exiled for the crime of being different. It could be set on earth, a far away planet, or in a different time…it doesn’t matter. To be different… means being ostracized with the rest of your kind. The episode is set in a dystopian society. Miss Tyler was sent to live in a community with others "of her kind.If you want to see where we are… HERE is a list of the episodes. How could the doctors have responded subversively to Miss Tyler's appearance? She did not want to accept any alternative to the empire she wanted to be the 'normal' that was chosen by the empire. Miss Tyler herself had a captured imagination. They question the conformist rules of the government and express that they see the true human underneath Miss Tyler's appearance. The seeds of redemption can be seen in some of the comments by the doctors. ![]() The Leader is heard proclaiming, "It is essential for society not only that we have a norm, but that we conform to that norm!" The empire established by the Leader and government ensnares people to think that conformity is needed to have an ideal world. The audience is to understand that the origin of evil is forced conformity (conforming everyone to have pig-like faces). The woman, Miss Tyler, is constantly exclaiming and pleading, "I want to be like everybody else!" or "All I've ever wanted is to be normal." It is finally revealed that Miss Tyler is a beautiful young woman, but 'normal' people have distorted pig-like faces. You don't see the faces of the doctors, nurses, and the woman until her bandages are removed at the end of the episode. In this episode, a woman is in a hospital receiving treatment in order to fix the condition of her face. The scenarios of each episode are said to take place in the 'Twilight Zone' meaning it is some kind of alternate reality or possibly a look into the future. The episode entitled "Eye of the Beholder" is episode six of season two. The Twilight Zone is a TV series that aired in the 1960s.
